Report: ‘Huge’ Matt Ryan contract extension to be discussed this offseason

Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons fell just short of a trip to Super Bowl XLVII. But on the strength of perhaps the best season in his five-year career, the Falcons are prepared to reward Ryan with a hefty new contract heading into next season, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on Sunday.

When the Falcons drafted Ryan third overall in the 2008 NFL Draft, they gave him a six-year, $66 million deal. He is set to enter into the final year of his rookie contract in 2013 and is scheduled to be paid $10 million.

The 27-year-old Ryan set numerous personal career highs this season — completion percentage (68.6 percent), passing yards (4,719), passing touchdowns (32) and quarterback rating (99.1). He also led the Falcons to the best record in the NFC this season.

Overall, Ryan has guided the Falcons to the playoffs in four of his first five seasons under center. He also presided over the franchise’s first playoff win in the era in dramatic fashion last week against the Seattle Seahawks.

There’s no telling what kind of contract Ryan would be looking for, but Glazer reported that the Falcons were set to offer a “mega-deal.” Most of Ryan’s stats put him among the top five NFL quarterbacks.
