The Toronto Maple Leafs easily disposed of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night in the Pens’ home opener, but an injury has put a damper on Toronto’s celebration.
In the second period of action, Maple Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul was struck in the upper body by a shot from teammate Dion Phaneuf. Phaneuf’s shot resulted in a fractured forearm for Lupul. There is no timetable for Lupul’s return.
To make matters worse for the Maple Leafs, it was just two days ago that Lupul signed a five-year, $26.25 million extension. Last season, Lupul ranked second in goals (25), assists (42), points (67) and power-play goals (8) for Toronto. His presence on the ice will be missed.
