A day after re-upping forward Jamie Benn to a five-year, $26.25 million contract, Dallas Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk identified his next target.
Derek Roy, the club’s veteran centre, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, which could see negotiations between Roy and the Stars pick up soon.
“He’s a smart, two-way player,” Nieuwendyk said of the former Buffalo Sabre. “He’s only going to get better as he gets to know our team. It’s a priority for us.”
Last summer, the Stars sent Steve Ott and Adam Pardy to Buffalo in exchange for Roy, who has a pair of assists through four games following the lockout.
