Daily Bagel: John Isner blasts Brazilian fans after Davis Cup match

The Daily Bagel is your dose of the interesting reporting, writing and quipping from around the Internet.

• Video: Tomas Berdych, Lukas Rosol, Stanislas Wawrinka and Marco Chiudinelli played the longest doubles match in history over the weekend, battling for 7 hours, 1 minute before Switzlerand’s Chiudinelli double-faulted on match point No. 13 to hand the Czechs the 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 24-22 win. I think it’s officially time to have a serious discussion about the necessity of a fifth-set tiebreaker.

• The New York Times reports that Wawrinka broke down in tears during his news conference after losing that seven-hour doubles match.

• From The Grandstand, John Isner had some strong words after losing his Davis Cup match to Thomaz Bellucci, both for the Brazilian fans and himself.

While Bellucci praised the fans and his teammates for pulling him through, Isner had a different opinion on the matter.

“I don’t appreciate their fans at all,” Isner said, putting it bluntly. “I think they are very rude.”

But the world No. 16 made sure to put the blame squarely on himself. “I thought (Bellucci) played pretty well, but it’s on me. I couldn’t quite win the big points. My five-set record is atrocious–simple as that–and it falls 100 percent on me. We’re in a dogfight now and a lot of that rests on my shoulders.”

• Bloomberg reports on Rafael Nadal’s decision to leave IMG. Much like Roger Federer, given his international stature and popularity, he simply doesn’t need it anymore to get sponsorship deals.

• From The Changeover, Marcelo Melo hit a front-side tweener — when did tennis shots start sounding like X-Games tricks? — on the way to upsetting Bob and Mike Bryan with partner Bruno Soares.

• Mardy Fish was in Jacksonville, Fla., practicing with the U.S. Davis Cup team, but his future is still in doubt.

• From Tennis Grandstand, things got heated between the Bryans and the Brazilians on Saturday, with Bob Bryan yelling across the net at Melo.

“Davis Cup is an emotional atmosphere. They got passionate after they thought they won the set. I got passionate to them. There were some words said. You know, no hard feelings, no grudges.” The sentiment was similar from the Brazilians. Marcelo Melo seemed a bit confused about what happened, saying, “Bob never did this before. We have really good relationship. I have him as a friend. In that moment I got in shock. How Bob did this, is not normal.”

• From The Slice, here’s what Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Nadal will be wearing this spring. Hint: It’s green.

• Non-tennis: In case you missed it, here’s Beyonce’s Super Bowl halftime show.
