The nation's No. 1 football recruit has turned silent.
Soon, he'll be hungry.
But in the end, said his father, he'll be satisfied.
Since a week ago Saturday, Wichita (Kan.) East running back Bryce Brown -- a ''soft'' commit to the University of Miami -- has been secluded with an uncle in Nebraska to escape the frenzy surrounding his pending decision about where to attend college. Unless there's a dramatic change in Brown's plan, that decision will not come Wednesday, National Signing Day. It might not even come for another month or more, as NCAA rules state that players have until April 1 to sign their scholarship offers.
Bryce Brown is college football's most-sought-after running back who committed to UM -- sort of -- a year ago. At 6-0 and 215 pounds, he runs between 4.3 and 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash and is rated the nation's top high school senior, regardless of position, by rivals.com and scout.com. He ran for a Wichita City League record of 1,850 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2008. He blocks like an all-star fullback, has soft hands across the middle and an engine that goes from zero to see-ya-later in seconds.
But Brown, who graduated high school in December, does not have certainty. Not yet.
Brown will likely choose among Miami, Tennessee, Auburn or Southern Cal for his final two official visits, said Butler, who has set up a pay-for-view website -- www.potentialplayers.com -- with stories about the athletes he trains. Brown already has officially visited Missouri, Oregon and Clemson.
