For two days, he has been No-Thrill Phil.
This is a wretched development. For both him and Pebble Beach. When you add it all up, this is not the Phil Mickelson that we have all come to know and over-psychoanalyze.
We need that Phil back. We need the go-for-broke guy who would succeed wildly or fail spectacularly. Mickelson hasn't beenin position to do much of either. He missed the cut at his first start, two weeks ago in Phoenix. He tied for 42nd last week in San Diego. Mickelson has shot no round higher than 76, no round lower than 70.
All of this after his short-game coach, Dave Pelz, told Sports Illustrated last month that Mickelson was primed to have a "monster year" and predicted: "Two majors. That's what I'm looking for."
Two consecutive birdies. That's what the rest of us are looking for. Mickelson hasn't done that yet this year.
Even so, the Mickelson malaise would not be too alarming, except that he usually rips up the West Coast portion of the PGA Tour. He has won two of the past four AT&T Pro-Ams and won three times overall at Pebble Beach.
