Speaking of Muhammad, he had this to say about the state of the Chicago quarterback situation: "In the time Brett Favre has started for the Packers -- what's it been, 16 years? -- I bet the Bears have had 16 different starting quarterbacks. You've got to find the right guy and stick with him.''

Sixteen is low, actually. The Bears have had an NFL-high 21 starting quarterbacks while their neighbors to the north have had one.

Three thoughts about Florida:

1. I love the Jacksonville airport. Free wireless (who ever heard of that in a big airport?), no long lines, a pleasant lobby where flyers, before entering security, actually sit and read. Imagine that! Reading! A full-service Starbucks with polite baristas. Actually gives me hope that traveling doesn't have to be an endurance test. The one fault: Muzak. Horrible. Distracting.

2. I caught a summer cold somewhere between or in Orlando (Bucs camp) and Jacksonville. So at this time of year, obviously, it's a broiler outside. It feels wonderful to step into a building cooled to 68 or 66 or whatever, which is what the Gaylord Palms Hotel lobby just outside Disney World felt like. The halls were freezing. When I walked into the room, the thermostat was set to 68. Freezing. I must be getting old.

In Jacksonville, I walked into the team cafeteria, and that place HAD to have been 64, or less. The team meeting room, I'm guessing, was 64. And late in the afternoon last Monday, sure enough, I start blowing my nose and sneezing. I'm not an allergy guy, so I knew what it was -- 95 outside, 68 inside. In and out, in and out. You get to the point in Florida where you actually look forward to being outside.

3. Jacksonville just never became Atlanta Jr., which the NFL was sure would happen when it committed to putting a franchise here 15 years ago. Still looks like Hartford with palm trees to me. Nothing wrong with that, but business didn't grow the way the NFL thought it would.

Thirsty. Very thirsty. Parched, in fact, on a U.S. Airways flight from Jacksonville to Charlotte last Tuesday. Flight attendant walks down the aisle with small bottles of water saying, "Water? Water? Water?''

I am the sucker, in the aisle seat at the back of coach.

"I'll take one,'' I say.

"Two dollars,'' he says.

I am stunned. I have never paid for a glass of water on an airplane. But I am parched. I pull out the $2. I pay.

Stupid sheep that I am.

Jeremy Shockey obviously has no use for his New Jersey home, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, now that he's been dealt to New Orleans. And so he has loaned it to Joba Chamberlain.

1. I think these are my thoughts of the preseason weekend:

a. Two really impressive players for the Jets Thursday night: Wideout David Clowney, taken off the Green Bay practice squad last year, should make the roster; he can fly, and he gets good separation from corners. And I don't care who Brett Ratliff was playing against in Cleveland -- he's a confident quarterback with some ability and a good-enough arm to be on an NFL roster.

b. Matt Leinart will win the Arizona job if he plays two more games like he did Thursday night against the Saints. He looks like the USC Leinart, confident with a good-enough arm.

c. Chris Simms (8-of-10 vs. Miami, took a good hit, felt fine) will be well-pursued when the Bucs let him go this month.

d. John Beck will not.

e. Ricky Williams (five carries, 31 yards) looked like an NFL running back against Tampa Bay.

f. Ahman Green strained a groin against Denver, and he continues to look like money poorly spent for the Texans.

g. Watching the highlights Sunday morning, there was nothing as impressive as rookie Titan back Chris Johnson's 66-yard touchdown burst against the Rams. Remember when we all ridiculed Tennessee for taking their third straight running back on the first day of the draft in April? Never mind. Johnson's speed could be a real difference-maker for Tennessee.

h. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jason Campbell (12-of-15 in two quarters so far) is going to be really good for the Redskins.
